An exciting new era of Star Wars history is about to begin--as fantasy and
science fiction's most acclaimed authors propel the legendary epic into the
next millennium, introducing us to a rich cast of characters that features
old favorites--Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Leia Organa Solo--along with the
next generation of Jedi and never-before seen creatures, droids, and deadly
agents of darkness. In Vector Prime, the launch novel for this thrilling new
saga, New York Times bestselling author R. A. Salvatore takes the Star Wars
universe to previously unscaled heights of action and imagination, expanding
the beloved story of a galaxy far, far away . . .
Twenty-one years have passed since the heroes of the Rebel Alliance destroyed
the Death Star, breaking the power of the Emperor. Since then, the New
Republic has valiantly struggled to maintain peace and prosperity among the
peoples of the galaxy. But unrest has begun to spread; tensions erupt in
outbreaks of rebellion that, if unchecked, threaten to destroy the Republic's
tenuous reign.
Into this volatile atmosphere comes Nom Anor, a charismatic firebrand who
heats passions to the boiling point, sowing seeds of dissent for his own dark
motives. In an effort to avert a catastrophic civil war, Leia travels with
her daughter Jaina, her sister-in-law Mara Jade Skywalker, and the loyal protocol droid
C-3PO, to conduct face-to-face diplomatic negotiations with Nom Anor. But he
proves resistant to Leia's entreaties--and, far more inexplicably, within the
Force, where a being should be, was . . . blank space.
Meanwhile, Luke is plagued by reports of rogue Jedi Knights who are taking the
law into their own hands. And so he wrestles with a dilemma: Should he
attempt, in this climate of mistrust, to reestablish the legendary Jedi
Council?
As the Jedi and the Republic focus on internal struggles, a new threat
surfaces, unnoticed, beyond the farthest reaches of the Outer Rim. An enemy
appears from outside known space, bearing weapons and technology unlike
anything New Republic scientists have ever seen. Suddenly Luke, Mara, Leia,
Han Solo, and Chewbacca--along with the Solo children--are thrust again into
battle, to defend the freedom so many have fought and died for. But this
time, all their courage, sacrifice, and even the power of the Force itself
may not be enough. . . .

Summary: Vector Prime Review
Comment: The first novel in the New Jedi Order Series explains how a new alien species watched, waited, and infiltrated the New Republic in order to conquer the galaxy. After twenty-one years of building a new government, the fledging society is teaming with political snags and unsettling rumors. Though just beyond the threshold waits something even more sinister, the Yuuzhan Vong.
The New Republic's foundations are being shaken from interstellar political power plays to a deadlier threat then the Empire. Balancing the new invaders and unrest, the New Republic is about to be hit by another blow. The aliens attack planets and disrupt their ecology making planets unlivable to their former residents. Refugees are beginning to overwhelm other planets and populations. Though there is one more discernable punch the New Republic takes before the story ends. The long time companion of a main character is killed while saving another character.
The biologically based technology of the new alien species does more than elude the prodding of the Force. These devices give a frustrating advantage over the New Republic forces which are out manned and tactically challenged by the invaders strange technology and functionality. Not sure of the Yuuzhan Vong's motivations the galaxy soon realizes how destructive the aliens' intentions are as planets are lost and a friend is killed.
The death of this character took many readers by surprise. Some believing this action gave validity to the Yuuzhan Vong's deadliness. Others feel this death was unwarranted at this time in the series, if at all warranted.
Though not a strong first story in the series of New Jedi Order, the book does set up the basic storyline. This reviewer feels the kiling of a main character so early in a series does little to convince the audience about the deadliness of the YV or increase the emotional shock an event like this one should make.

Summary: No one here gets out alive
Comment: Vector Prime, the first installment in the massive New Jedi Order series, may just be the most criticized book in the Star Wars canon, which is quite understandable since the author had the audacity to kill one of Star Wars' most beloved characters (I know it's been 8 years, but a spoiler is still a spoiler, so I'm not saying who got killed). For me though, Vector Prime was a breath of fresh air after what seemed like dozens of Star Wars novels in which nothing ever happened that would ever change the precious status quo. Zahn's Thrawn trilogy, Anderson's Jedi Academy trilogy, and Stackpole's X-Wing series aside, every Star Wars book seemed to follow the same basic formula, with everything back to normal by the last page.
Vector Prime changed all that. Things happen in this book. Big things. Characters, even major ones, die, planets are destroyed, and the good guys start to lose. The series' principal antagonists - the Yuuzhan Vong - are introduced here, and more disturbing than their organic weaponry and "Force invisibility" is the fervent religious zeal with which they carry out even the most mundane tasks. I don't know if the author modeled the Vong's ideology on any specific religion, but when reading the book in a post-9/11 world you can't help but draw some parallels to certain forms of religious extremism.
Salvatore seems to understand the Star Wars characters quite well, given the fact that this is his first foray into Lucas territory, and his story sets the stage for the catastrophic events that would follow. I definitely felt the loss of the fallen character, but it was integral to the story and served as a wake up call to Star Wars fans. From this point on, there is no status quo. Nothing and no one is safe. The events in this series are real, and have lasting consequences to the Star Wars Universe. All I can say is that it's about damn time.
I know some Star Wars purists had apoplectic fits after this book, but those who were open-minded enough to see the New Jedi Order through to its conclusion were rewarded with one of the best, and most important, Star Wars sagas.
